Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students are changing elective classes as the first semester ends. Elective classes are different classes from things like reading and math. Some examples of these classes are math empowerment (6th grade), journalism (7th and 8th grade), creative writing (8th grade), projects and presentations (6th 7th and 8th grade). There are two semesters in the year, so you change electives once a year. You have at least three electives every semester. There is a small chance that some of your normal non-elective classes get mixed around as well.
If you are in elementary school at South Shore, you would have trimesters. Trimesters means that there are three different sections that they split the year into. For middle school, the year is split into two or semesters.
